At Login: enter your regular username, press enter, and then the password when asked for. Once you have done that, type:
Code:
cd /var/log/ <enter>
less Xorg.0.log <enter>
You can scroll in this file with the arrow keys, PgUp and PgDn. You leave this program by pressing 'q'.

Read through the end of this file. There will be indications what is wrong. Pay special attention to lines starting with '(EE)'.

If you need help with those error messages, copy the lines verbatim in your post. Exactly like they appeared on screen.

I recommend that you use a linux which aids you in learning.

e.g. gentoo + gentoo handbook + arch / gentoo wiki

or read full a linux book which covers shell / basics / x-server

resetting a password / entering a password is the same since 1996 or earlier

any linux i used so far had somewhere a step to setup a user + passphrase

Your file system has a problem. Load the 'system rescue disk' on a USB stick (or a CD, if you swing that way), boot onto it, run e2fsck on your boot disk.

Or, at the grub boot menu you can hit 'e', navigate to the kernel line, and append '/bin/bash' to it. Then the machine will boot into runlevel 1. You should be able to run fsck from there.
