Question Lockup with Siemens SpeedStream Wireless Card

Hello all,
I have just recently installed Slackware 9.0 for the first time on my Toshiba A15-S127 laptop. Everything installed and auto-probed flawlessly, with the exception of my SpeedStream Wireless SS1021 card. I have read previous posts by Mr. Finegan which have enabled me to get the card installed and detected...

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...003/07/1/13386

but I am having a problem configuring the card. when I run 'iwconfig' I get the following...

eth1 IEEE 802.11-DS ESSID:"" Nickname:"Prism I"
Mode:Managed Frequency:42.9497GHz Access Point:00:00:00:00:00:00
Bit Rate:11Mb/s Tx-Power=15 dBm Sensitivity:1/3
Retry min limit:8 RTS thr:off Fragment thr:off
Encryption key:off
Power Management:off
Link Quality:0/92 Signal level:-68 dBm Noise level:-122 dBm
Rx invalid nwid:0 Rx invalid crypt:0 Rx invalid frag:0
Tx excessive retries:0 Invalid misc:0 Missed beacon:0

According to http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...003/01/1/40195 I should be able to type 'ifconfig eth1 up' to enable the Wireless and let it lease an IP Address, but when I do the laptop freezes. The only workaround I have figured out is to type 'cardctl suspend' then 'cardctl resume'. Then I can run the 'ifconfig eth1 up' and the wireless card connects to the access point. However, when I type 'dhclient eth1', it either says that eth1: not found, or it will say....

listening on Socket/eth1
Sending on Socket/eth1
DHCPDISCOVER on eth1 to 255.255.255.255 port 67 interval 8
Discarding packet with bogus hlen.

This repeats with different interval numbers of 13, 18, 16 and others..

Any idea? Thanks!

-Anthony

Did you cut/paste the output of iwconfig, or type it by hand? I ask because that frequency looks to be non-standard, must be a typo?

anyway, the card looks to be functional, must be a setup issue.

Try giving the card a (very) temporary ip address by hand and then going for a dhcp address. You can also try knocking down the mtu. Here's what those commands would look like as root from a console:

ifconfig eth1 10.0.0.1 (you can add " mtu 576" to this also)
iwconfig eth1 mode managed rate 11M channel x key xxxxxxxxxxxx essid "yours"
(use your channel # and key if you're using wep, in place of the x's)
then run iwconfig no params and see if you've got something besides 0's for Access Point, if so run dhclient or dhcpcd or whatever you're using to get a dhcp lease. If not, check your router/access point setup for something you may have missed, either allowed rates, MAC filtering, or WEP key.

Hello,
Thanks for your reply. I did type the result of iwconfig by hand, but I made sure that I got everything down correctly. I was able to work around my problem, but there has to be a simpler way to do this, as this only works half the time not locking up the laptop. I type these commands..

cardctl suspend
cardctl resume
ifconfig eth1 up
dhcpcd eth1

This gets me an IP address from the access point and i'm on-line. However, half the time when I get to the 'ifconfig eth1 up' stage, the laptop locks up and doesn't do anything. Any ideas? Thanks.
