My friend and I were taking a 'gander' at his moms antique laptop she had, and stupid him f'ed up the windows 3.1 it had, we couldnt find the quik restore floppy, disk, or whatever it came as. SO! I thought about putting a linux distro on it, which brings me to my question... whats the best(best as in how much space it takes up and how fast it starts up) Linux distro i can get that can run on it?

Its an "Epson 50something-something" i dont know, but it has a cyrix processor at 50Mhz, i think about 4-8 Mbs of ram(maybe more i check later), plus it has a floppy drive, MAYBE 1 usb 1.1 prot, a type one PCMCIA slot and other useless stuff.

O!!! and my last question is: How do u install Linux over a network? Thanx a bunch!

How much hard drive space? And any linux distribution as far as I know will only run in text mode on that machine... And I don't know if you want that. Another Idea, try searching in google for windows 3.1, odds are you can find the floopy images, and since you already had the license it's not illegal to download. Plus, it's practiacally abandonware anyway.

Wow, 3.1, ancient... Anyways depending how much HD space you have is the type of linux you need. If your mom's going to be using it i suggest using a Redhat version, im really happy with Redhat 9. Its easier to use and your mom would get the hang of it faster. With all the files on the disks which i got for free with the Linux Redhat 9 bible it only takes up a minuscule 4.4 gigs of HD, and thats with EVERYTHING. Good luck!

I'd like to point out BadKarma, that with 4-8MB of ram, he wouldn't be able to run the GUI, drastically decreasing the size of installation. Or at least run it decently...

I am sorry but the redhat minimal install is like 421 or something like that, and the minimal install has no X and no applications with it. So, I recomend an OLDER VERSION... Maybe something around RedHat 6.2 would be better, then you get some apps and the compiler too...
