I use a Compaq presario 915US and I can tell you that the modem in the Compaq models, (not sure about all but pretty dam sure about most) is a winmodem and not configurable without a driver from here. The driver only allows you to connect at a maxium of 14,400 bps. Otherwise, your best bet would be to to purchase an external modem which will work with your linux installation.
You need to know the phone number that you use to connect to your ISP and using kppp from the application menu on your linux distro will help your to get configured on the internet. You must do some reading for the basics if you get stuck but it is really easy.
I hope this gives you a starting point to work with.
Good luck.
P.S. Since you did not mention your distro, I presumed you needed to purchase an external modem but that is not necessarily the case. If you have a wireless connection, you could also use a pcmcia wireless card to connect to the net. I am not so versed in wireless but using google will help with a lot of questions and problem solving. You can always post back after trying to search it out in the forums or on some search engine first.
