linux on my thinkpad 760ed
I'm getting a little frustrated, i can't get linux on my laptop, ether it's debian(i can install it from floppys but it wont run on 32 mb ram) or it's knoppix or dsl(which both require a cdrom). could some1 help me out?
Is there any way i could get the kernel, a package manager and network drivers on the hard drive from a floppy? then maybe add everything else 1 package at a time? |
Linux on floppy only laptops - (DSL)
Hi,
I've installed DSL on a few small, (floppy only), laptops over the past few years. I use a DSL install method called the frugal(.sh) install. The first time I installed it was a little tough, but once you figure out how it works it's quite easy, here's the link: http://www.damnsmalllinux.org/wiki/i...Frugal_Install Good Luck, Craig |
Why not just take the drive out and stick it in a desktop box to install (using a 2.5"-3.5" adapter). Doesn't the 760 keyboard just flip up so you can access the insides?

ya sure it does, already thought of that, but also a thinkpad hdd is not like any other hdd, i'd have to get an adapter made for a thinkpad hdd to ide cable

ok, got current.iso, and the setup booted. new problem, the xserver returned garbage. i hit ctr+alt+backspace, but idk how to install dsl, is there an alternate install? or a way to use another xserver?

nvm the last post, ran xsetup.sh and works fine, rather low graphics but works.

DSL Wiki / Community help is good!
Now that you have it installed, use the Wiki and community users of DSL to troubleshoot the display settings, you can do it, they're helpful.
