every time i go to install redhat linux 9.0 on my labtop it freezes while loading a driver. before the install even begins. Is there a reason?? i know that iso's i burned from are good becuase i used them before to load linkux on other pc's. thanks for the help
Have you guys tried disabling legacy USB support in the BIOS? I have seen this suggestion made several times. I installed SuSE 8.2 on my Compaq 2170 with no problems after disabling the legacy USB. I didn't try it with legacy USB enabled.
I think the main difference between your HP and my Compaq is a firewire port. You might try bypassing the detection/module for firewire and see if that helps.

I had the exact same problem with my mandrake 9.1 install
I got round it by pressing the F1 key & passing the option "noauto" before the install, (I think it stops auto install of drivers) I have also heard of the options of "nofirewire" and "nousb" working,
I have no experience of Redhat so I dont know how you can do this but its worth a try.

PlatinumRik,
You might want to try the Netgear MA40RA card with your HP. I know that most of the onboard wireless nics don't work under linux. I describe how I set up my card at http://pages.sbcglobal.net/zvan.

I've got RH 9 to start OK.
At installation time, on the boot prompt I typed "linux firewire". This disabled the loading of the ochi1394 driver (firewire port).
Then at boot time once installation was over, it hung again on the ochi1394 loading again. I had to modify kernel parameters not to load this driver at boot time.
Using GRUB, I hit 'e' when the GRUB screen shows up. Then I choose the second line (the kernel one), I hit 'e' again. Then I added at the end of the line the following " nofirewire" and then ENTER and then 'b'. Linux started to boot, skipped the loading of the firewire driver but hung on hardware detection.
So I started all over and added " nofirewire nousb" for the kernel parameter and it worked.
I do not know what the nousb parameter does. I'm searching know. I will also consider DEBIAN. Recommandation of http://www.tuxmobil.org/Mobile-Guide...ile-Guide.html is DEBIAN which is the Linux distro that is the most notebook friendly.
Well, I have a 5385us, and guess what? It's so much of a pain to get RH 9.0 on there, I've given up on it. I run Mandrake 9.2RC2, in which everything runs beautifully. I mean everything... except USB. I have no idea on the USB, but I think it might be my machine. Not sure. Anyhow, That's what I would suggest.
how can you set the nofirewire and nousb options to be in there perm is it in the boot file???? And has anyone had any luck and/or experience with the built in wireless card? Thanks for you help!
