Awsome. Must feel pretty cool to know that your patch is included in the kernel.

Yeah, never thought that could ever happen! It's neat even if it's in there temporarily (hopefully somebody will replace it with better code). I can assure you that the patch is absolutely free of any SCO "intellectual property" whatsoever.

Sound Patch works great!

The new alsa install works great! It always feels wierd to use a "mute" computer. I had to make it from source but that wasn't bad at all.

3D accel is still a problem. I got the RPM you spoke about from ATI's site and tried installing it (for the correct version of XFree86 - I triple checked as I thought that may be the issue) but it won't install. When I attempt to install it I get an error saying it conflicts with a package that is part of XFree86. I have tried forcing the install of the ATI rpm and tried querying RPM for the XFree86 package that is conflicting (so I could uninstall it - figuring I could reinstall it if nessasary) but neither worked.

I would give the exact error message but I forgot the laptop at home today. I'll post the exact error tomorrow.

Thanks again for the sound patch!

I'm probably exaclty the opposite. I have the 3d working great, the alsa 1.04 compiled and running fine. Intel 8x0 is detected and installed just fine. Alsamixer runs fine. Unmuted all the channels and still no sound.

Running just the default 9.1 redhat install with the default smp kernel. 2.4 based kernel.

Just bothersome since once I get this to work I will have gotten everything else to work. 3d and wireless was easy compared to this for some reason. But I know I am probably just missing something small and hopefully someone will notice it.

Just installed SuSE 9.1 on my m675 and it seems to be a small step backwards.

What works:

1) 3d acceleration works (same XF86Config I posted previously)

2) Sound works but I cannot adjust the volume

4) DVD burning works

5) Touchpad works wih virtual scrolling

6) Battery monitor works.

7) USB mouse works

9) Printer works (old HP 895cxi)

10) Scanner works (Canon LIDE30)

What doesn't work:

1) Suspend of course doesn't work.

2) ACPI is overall not very fuctional. Have to make sure the thermal zone module is not loaded or the machine will shutdown during bootup (same as in 9.0).

3) Flash card reader doesn't work well. If a card is in during bootup, it will work. If no card in during boot, it won't work. This is of course a pain since you have to reboot if you want to change cards. Suse 9.0 worked okay with this card reader. I suspect it has to do with this new submount stuff but I am not sure. There also seems to be no obvious way to disable submount. From what I can tell, eliminating all references to it in fstab should do it but there isn't even an entry in fstab for the cardreader, even when I boot with a card in it. This is disappointing and I would appreciate help with this.

4) Can't get khotkeys to recognize the multimedia buttons. This worked in 9.0. Not sure what is wrong here since I don't really understand how it is supposed to work and I think I got lucky in getting it to work in 9.0.

5) My digital camera (kodak cx4230) has some problems. When I plug it in, I get an icon in the "My Computer" folder but I cannot access the camera with it. The error is something like "can't access folder" or some such thing. Logging in as root doesn't fix this. I can however access it with digikam and it works fine. I really prefer konqueror though. This worked in 9.0.

Overall it is disappointing on this machine. I lost more functionality than I gained and unless I can get the cardreader issue fixed I will probably go back to 9.0.

If you installed alsa-lib with the default values you can control the volume with PCM2 with kmixer or whatever mixer you use.

Having difficulties

Thanks to everyone for the very helpful info, but I'm still having some issues. I'm setting up Gentoo on my M675, and I've used their portage system to install alsa 1.0.3. I don't expect this to produce sound, but when I have it loaded and try to run anything that would have sound (xmms, aplay), the program will hang. My entire computer doesn't go down, just the offending app. Is this because of using the non-patched drivers, or is there some other issue at work? amixer sees my card (which it didn't at first, for some reason) and I've unmuted the channels. Also, as a side question, does anyone know how to apply a patch to an ebuild? Thanks!

I'm also having some problems with my Gateway M675 running Fedora Core 2 (kernel 2.6.6-172smp).

Thanks to the above hints as to what to turn on and amplify the sound works.

FC2 as compiled has the thermal acpi support but the thermal module causes it to shutdown during bootup(even with a correctly reported temperature of 23C or so). I use acpi=off to boot up since I'm a real noob and don't want to recompile the kernel.

My synaptics touchpad works but will not respond to the tap to click or the other advanced features, I think I need to just massage the X86Config file, tho'.

My main issue is that I can't get the built in wireless networking to function. I have installed ndiswrapper and the Broadcom drivers from Windows XP from the support CDs. ndiswrapper loads the driver but does not detect the WLAN card, and a hardware scan doesn't show it either. Any ideas on how to make the wireless work?

Thanks,

John

To get the touchpad to use it's special features, you need to install the open source driver for it. Without the specialized driver, the touchpad emulates a standard mouse, which is why it will work in X. With the special driver, you can have the tap to click(which I'm personally trying to turn off), scaled mouse movement, etc.

As far as the wireless card, I'm not sure why that didn't work. There are two possible reasons I can think of for this.

1. You may not actually have a wireless card. That should be pretty easy to verify. It says on the label on the bottom of the laptop, or you can use a windows and see if it finds it.

2. There might be a module you need to load first that will allow the card to be detected at all, or maybe the ndiswrapper isn't set up quite right.

That's a problem that will probably take a good bit of investigation. One thing you can do is check in /proc/pci and see if your computer sees the card at all. You can also look through the kernel messages with dmesg to find any information related to your card. This has more information than what goes by when you boot. If you'd like more specific help, please post error messages and any info you find from the above places.

Hello all,

I, too, am having problems with the wireless card showing up, but have a theory as to why this is.

It does appear when looking in /proc, as a Broadcom adapter, but the driver won't load, whether I am using Red Hat, SuSE, or whatever version I load.

I believe the issue may be with the fact the card is disabled... What I mean by that, is in Windows, you have to enable the wireless card using the button on the keyboard, which then illuminates blue. In Linux, that light is never blue, even if you push it. I am assuming Linux isn't catching the code sent by that button, but then I don't know what it would need to do to enable the card.

Any suggestions?

Thanks for your help in advance!

The light not showing up is because the card hasn't been turned on, but it would be turned on automatically when the driver is loaded. What would be nice is a function to turn the card on and off afterward, but functioning period is much more important. Once you get the driver to load, the light will turn on and your card should work. You might want to make sure you have all of the appropriate modules loaded in your kernel, and check your logs to see if there's any sort of error message.

Hmm... Thanks for the info Gabe!

The issue I was having was that the driver for the NIC was being picked up during installation, but the driver would never load... I'll have to reload a version of Linux on this system again and try it again...

Thanks

Sigmatel C-Major Audio Problems

Hey, I own a Gateway M675 XL and I am having problems with my microphone. I read the previous threads about plugging the headset into the first jack and I get audio just fine, but I cannot get Linux to map the microphone port to anything else. I attempted to diddle with all of the KMix settings, but to no avail. Can anyone help me to get my headset microphone working. Additionally when I try to use sound recorder, when I press the record button, it crashes so I would think that the driver is messing up.

For the life of me,

I cannot get the sound to work on my m675xl. I have reviewed all of the above posts but still no avail. I purchased my Gateway m675xl late December 2004. I am runing SUSE 9.3 and my ALSA drivers are version 1.0.8. I am assuming since the above poster that put the kernel patch in 1.0.4 I probobly have that fix. Anyone have any ideas? Oh and I also cannot get 3D excelleration. I have a Radeon 9700 128MB
card in this notebook.

Any ideas or advice is appreciated.

stac9752 patch ?

I have stac9752. after studying the patch for stac9758 i thought of putting patch for mine stac9752. Can you help me to understand the link between alsa ... snd-ac97-codec ie. by studying the code of ac97_codec.c it didnt sound to me like a driver. I also want to know if there is any other driver to be inserted after snd-ac97-codec.ko.... like snd-intel8x0.

another thing : in ac97_codec.c against stac9752 '//patch ? ' was written. I couldnt guess wht it means ... does it means its been already patched or it is to be patched
