hi i am new to linux. i know pretty much nothing.
i am trying to install red hat 9 on my gateway 400vtx laptop and im having some issues.

i have an intel 855gm graphics card which red hat recognized but it can not recognize map laptop screen.

I am supposed to be able to get 1024x768 resolution but i can only get 800x600.

another problem is that my laptop fan seems to never shut off. it is always running.

does anyone know if i can fix these problems or am i just stuck and have to hope that the next version of redhat has the drivers.

any help would be greatly appreciated..

Redhat is terrible at identifying graphics cards. Never gets my GeForce correct.

The fan is probably Acpi related. New/newer laptops use ACPI to control sound, fan, and many other internal components. Redhat does not support this without re-compiling the kernel with ACPI enabled.
