Linux on Acer Travelmate 630.
I have installed different linux distributions on my laptop:
- Ubuntu 8.4
- Kubuntu 8.4
- Ubuntu 8.10
- Kubuntu 8.10
- Mandrivia 2009
but at the end I have always the same problem:
randomly after 5 minutes (sime times less) the laptop freeze and I need to hard reset the PC by removing the power.
At the beginning I thought it was a problem with the Synaptics Touchpad but now I can say that it freezes also if I leave the laptop on without using it.
I can I investigate the reason for this ?
It's one month I'm fighting with this problem and I'm gatting crazy (also because I don't sleep for investigating this issue).
Thanks for who can help.
Ciao

Those types of lockup problems are frequently problems with acpi. Have you tried using any boot parameters to get around this issue? The usual ones to try are:
noapic nolapic acpi=off

It depends on the distro, but typically, when the grub boot selection screen comes up you hit F2 and you are able to type in those boot parameters then hit Enter. That will cause the system to boot the kernel you selected with those additional boot parameters you typed in.
This is not a permanent change. The boot parameters will be active only for that particular boot. If it helps, you can make your system always use those boot parameters by editing the boot entry you want in /boot/grub/menu.lst. Post memu.lst here and I'll explain exactly what to do.

I continue on this 3d because I have again a freeze problem.
The Kubuntu worked very well untill I tried to install my wireless adapter WG511V2.
I installe it with the inf file using NDISWRAPPER utility.
This was succesfull but when the adapter inserted in the PCMCIA I again experience frequent freeze of the computer.
The noapic nolapic options are still active.
If I remove the adapter, the system is very stable and no freeze.
Is there any suggestion that can solve this issue ?
I also uninstalled the KDE network manager and installed the WICD (someone told me it is more user frendly) but now the situation is not changed for the freeze and, additionally, the WG511 card is only initialised with the green fix led and no blink of the orange one.
Thanks for any help on the issue.
Ciao
