Wink Linux on a Compaq Contura 430CX

I installed VectorLinux 2.5 on a laptop, a Compaq Contura 430CX. Now I am trying to make X-Windows work with the graphic Sax installation program.

The problem is the laptop does not recognize any of the graphic cards that are listed. The types of monitors listed are mainly VGA and SVGA type lcd (this should give no problem, or would it?). I need detailed information on the type of chipset and the graphics card used in the Contura, it is a rather out of date model, I am aware of this; these are all together on one board and I haven't got a clue which settings to use.

Everything else works fine, so it is the card in the Sax configuration menu which is giving me trouble. Where can I find the exact details on cards and chipsets for this type op laptop (and any other tech data I would need for configuration). I have already downloaded a technical manual pdf-file which hasn't yielded anything yet. The official Compaq website has little information on this old type of laptop.

do you know how much video ram the machine has ? if you are unable to find information about the video chip in the laptop, it may be well worth dissasembling the machine to find out.

Compaq Contura 430CX

chipset

WD90C24 video chip

--------------------------------------
from xf86config file
--------------------------------------

Section "Device"
Identifier "Compaq Contura"
VendorName "Compaq"
BoardName "Compaq Contura 430CX"
EndSection

Section "Screen"
Driver "svga"
Device "Compaq Contura"
Monitor "ViewSonic 17GS"
Subsection "Display"
Depth 8
Modes "1024x768" "640x480"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
EndSection

--------------------------------------

I believe that XFree86 3.3.x was the last version of X that supported the SVGA driver, and on the machine that I have that uses the WD90C24, it (XFree86 3.3.x) was the only version of X that allowed me to get decent display resolution and colors
