linux on a 760ed

I'm trying to install linux on a p133 32mb ram 1gn hdd. but for some reason puppy freezes when i get the live cd booted and atempt to run the install, and dsl won't load the xserver(xorg seems to be the only one i've gotten to do anything). the other one that comes with puppy(also comes with dsl) gives me black and blue rectngles(in no specific pattern), and the second one with dsl(that it recommemds for older laptops just gives me a fatal error. any help??? if you need anymore spesificts i'm using an IBM thinkpad 760ED minus the floppy, with a pcmcia xircom lan/modem(with a backup kingston that comes up as a PnP IBM credit card LAN adapter in case of driver issues). and the method of installing i'm using is to extract files from an iso and use grub for dos to boot it from the hdd.

Just try a few different distros. I have had random lockups and other compatibility problems with puppy/dsl and some other live cds in the past. Try a couple of standard (non-live) distros. Slackware worked OK on a 760el I had a couple of years ago, though I didn't install X.

If you're gonna try Slackware, which will probably work well, try version 11.0, that way you can choose between either 2.4.x or 2.6.x kernels if you want. You could also install 12.0, but then you'd have to use a 2.6.x kernel, and there's nothing wrong with that either, but on a machine that old, there's not much you can use from the features available in 12.0 anyway. For sure you can't run KDE on that. Make sure to choose fluxbox, blackbox, and other very light window managers, maybe install icewm.
