[SOLVED] Linux Mint 17.3 on Acer Aspire E15 freezing during boot and randomly during use

About half the time my laptop freezes during boot at the LM logo while booting. This laptop is a dedicated Linux machine. It also freezes randomly while in Chromium browser. The machine has a 500 GB HDD and 4 GB DDR3 L Memory. As a side note, the touchpad no longer works since loading Mint.

Obviously substitute Linux Mint 17.3 for Elementary OS in the instructions (which I suggest you print first and keep handy).
