Thanks GSivill,

I am a long time linux-user, over 13 years now.
I will try it with the Kubuntu 18.04, I run 16.04 on my desktop with Plasma 5.8.9.
No matter what OS there will always be some issues but I am more then happy not to be
a windows 10 user . . .

As soon as I finished a server-move with 80+ domains/webapps (55 are done) I will order the notebook,
and report back on my experiences.

Kind regards,
Jan

FWIW, I'll mention that my laptop (Samsung NP350C-A05UK vintage 2013) boots imto UEFI mode regardless of BIOSsettings if it sees a GPT formatted disk, To get 'Legacy Mode' I have to format my hard disk as MBR.

Well, I have it installed.

Kubuntu 18.04 is working fine and when I boot I get grub with a possibility to boot Win 10.

Only, if I boot win 10, the screen gets scrambled and I have no mousecursor.

Is there a way to influence the graphic card with grub? Windows is there and even functioning, I see the
taskbar on top of the screen and below half a screen of "coloured brushed aluminium".

It seems that after the installation of Kubuntu, grub is written in the 500 Mb partition used for UEFI,
after that I could not use Windows.

Anyone an Idea?

Regards,
Jan

IIRC, you can set global and individual graphics options, and some of these are probably doing it.

Thanks business kid,

as a matter of fact I am just reading about setting graphic_payload in grub.
I know my way in Linux, but running Linux-only I never had to deal much with grub,
it just worked ;-).

Since I can blindly login to Windows I did not de-install it, knew there
would be a way.

I can reach grub over Kubuntu so just have to figure out the right setting.

Kind regards,
Jan

How do I adjust the grub.cnf in a EFI system?

In grub I added for the Win10-entry
GRUB_GFXMODE 1920x1080
resulting in an error notifying that the ?? was set to 0x7 (too fast to read it all)
and win 10 started normally.
After that I restarted several times and it is working normally, where I did not change a thing!

Just in Kubuntu, the icons on the desktop do not work normally after the last update of over 350 packages,
I will figure that out.

It is nice to know I can work with Kubuntu and can support win10 when necessary, not being stuck to win10.

Thanks and regards,
Jan

Glad to hear you got Linux running OK on the HP 255 G6.
Can't help with the grub.cnf issue.

Hi GSivill,

seems I do not need help, since the 1 time "gfxmode" and nothing saved,
the systems are up and running.

Kubuntu updates 10 minutes
Windows 10 updates still running over half an hour now . . .

Regards,
Jan

FWIW, and to avoid scaring possible owners of this machine the way the rest of this thread scared me, I had no trouble installing xubuntu 18.04.1 (completely replacing Windows 10) from a DVD iso in the HP 255 G6's internal drive. I first disabled Secure Boot and then set the DVD drive as first boot device following HP's own instructions at https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03736054 under "Pavilion, Presario, and Envy Notebook Computers". (I've never seen this method of entering the BIOS options, but hey, it worked.)

only linux is not too hard

if one only installs Linux then that is not too hard.

It is dualboot and to be clear, the win10 peculiarities that make it more difficult.
But nothing one cannot overcome if one takes time to read this forum.

Regards,
Jan
