Linux crashing on IBM R40e

Hello all. I'm have a few issues with linux and a IBM R40e. I first installed Ubuntu 11.10 on it but it started to crash and kept crashing. I then tried Ubuntu 10.10 but that crashed as well so i tried OpenSUSE 12.1 but it crashed to so i tried Debian squeeze and it was going fine for a while but then it crashed. The caps lock LED was flashing and the screen went black but the cursor was still there when it crashed.

I've ran memtest86+ for 9 passes and no errors, i've checked the hard drive SMART records but everything there seems fine. I really don't know what else to do.

Computer spec's:

IBM R40e 2684 L9G
2.4GHz Intel celeron processor
624MB ram
ATI radeon 330M 16MB integrated Graphics Card
hitachi 30GB hard drive
DVD rom drive
OS: Debian squeeze
D-Link DWA-140 USB wireless adapter

A bit low on ram I'd think but usually it doesn't crash.

Start at bios. Set to failsafe or default settings.

Boot using failsafe linux install and see how it goes. It may be that you need to use options like no dma, noscsi, no acpi, no acpi local. See each distro's boot options. I doubt it but maybe no edd

according to kmutos hardware chart for debian. Your r 40 should be OK.

You do not mention which Desktop you are running. On my IBM t23 and a22m. I run Fluxbox and IceWM as window managers to keep the load lighter on processor and ram. I run Iron Browser and Iceape Browser on Mine also with lighter applications also.

Edit: You might want to have top or htop running to see what is straining your laptop also before it crashes.

I have less ram and prcessor speed than you and my IBM a22m does not crash.

are you using compiz? I'be had issues with compiz that has caused debian and slackware, two very stable distros to crash.

Thanks for all your replies. I started using LXDE and now i'm using XFCE. I'm also not using compiz. I'm using chromium too. It's hard to figure out whats doing it because it's so random. It can do it several times a day and then not to it for a few days. Also the screen has frozen a few times too. Mainly using chromium. I have to hold the power button down to get it turned off. It usually crash's using chromium and asunder. I don't remember it crashing any other time.
