You do not mention which Desktop you are running. On my IBM t23 and a22m. I run Fluxbox and IceWM as window managers to keep the load lighter on processor and ram. I run Iron Browser and Iceape Browser on Mine also with lighter applications also.
Edit: You might want to have top or htop running to see what is straining your laptop also before it crashes.
I have less ram and prcessor speed than you and my IBM a22m does not crash.
