linux booting takes long time

hi all
i have installed linux OpenSuse 10.2 on my labtop which is Acer, version Aspire 5050 (AMD processor)

i have pre-installation of windows-xp too.

but i noticed that the booting time of linux OS takes a lot of time when i press "ESC" button during booting to get more information about what happend , i found out the following error :

ATA: abnormal status 0x7f on port F0878087

and this line was repeated many times and after the booting is finished i checked the /var/log/boot.message that contains the following errro:

<4>ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_codec.c:212: invalid dep_range_val 0:7fff
<7>ALSA sound/pci/hda/hda_intel.c:590: get_response timeout: IRS=0x10

and these lines were repeated a lot of times.

my kernel is version 2.6.18

all what i just want that the boot time to be fast & small
thanks in advance for your help

Hi

it sounds like open suse has a problem with your sound card. it may have not correctly identified it on install? I cant help you with that part because Im running Ubuntu 7.1.
I looked at my help page in Ubuntu. and searched for "alsa", it brought up a page with
at least 10 links that discribe the alsa function. I would start there on your system.

also check the add/remove section and click sound, the search for "alsa", it will bring up a list of controls, plugins, and programs for specific sound cards. yours may be one of them.

I would also check the acer website to see if they list any linux drivers for your sound card.

does your sound work? can you play an MP3 or other sound file?

maybe this will get you going in the right direction

Vanessa
