levono ideapad y510 with linux
I'm basically looking around for computers to get for college in a year or two and when I was searching tigerdirect for levono's (i only like the levono/ibm, they're made good) i found the ideapad y510. it had a good amount of space, 160gb, good amount of memory, 2gb, and was fast enough for me, 1.86 ghz. does anyone have any expirience with this computer with linux. i would probably use debian testing or slackware or gentoo, maybe fedora if i felt like it. just wondering about any sucess stories with it.
ps.I don't use much ram hogging stuff. Like i use fluxbox/blackbox and xfce4 and small stuff like that. |
Hi Texas
I dont have the IBM laptop you mentioned. Mine is a T40. 1.4 ghz, 1 gig ram. Im running Ubuntu Hardy. I tried several versions of linux before settling on Ubuntu. everything worked right from the install with Ubuntu. Suse, Debian the wireless did not work. with Sam Mint it did. I havent had any problems with Ubuntu on my T40. You may do a search for lenovo or ibm in the forums and find some reference to the model your interested. You may want to check lenovo.com under the used re-certified equipment for deals on used laptops. they are very reasonable. Good Luck Vanessa |
I too have IBM T40's. actually two. one running Debian lenny, and another, at the moment, running fedora 9. I love them, but they are just starting to fall apart, like the key board and some screws are missing. They are like old company throw away computers so. they are very nice machines and have been very good to me. I heard very good things about the levono T61, but it is like just under 2000 USD where i have looked. I did the "search for like threads" option thing when i created the post. I would doubt that I would have many issues, but I only know the T series so. I'll probably end up giving into the T61 temptation anyways.
but still, if anyone knows how good it is with linux, please, do tell. PS. what wireless card and what debian did you try. |
