lenovo laptop ethernet card not connected Suse 10.2

I am having problem connecting to internet via ethernet card. While configering the internet connection with yast it says card "not connected". ifup eth0 command says 'interface eth0 is not available'.
The laptop has broadcom netextrem gigabite ethernet card its linux driver is tg3 which is duly displayed on lsmod command.
Could anyone help please.

openSUSE 10.2 is slightly outdated, and many problems such as that are fixed in newer releases. I don't quite like 11.1, but I think 10.3 would do the job for you. The updated tg3 driver may have been updated in a newer release. However, if you don't want to upgrade, then just try updating your driver.

good luck,

The problem exists even after updating tg3 driver.

While configuring with yast, did you see an option that says "Network Setup Option"? If this is set as NetworkManager, then you will need to switch the options if you want to use ifup. Otherwise, you will have to use KNetworkManager. In my experience, NetworkManager has worked majority of the time, but is quite frustrating if it doesn't.

In both cases it says 'ethernet card not connected'.
Sir please wait for a few days as I am looking for upgrading
my Suse.I shall report back then.

What does ifconfig show? Did you confirm that your ethernet device is eth0 and not something else?

deepankar 03-03-2009 09:58 AM

ifconfig
lo Link encap:Local Loopback
inet addr:127.0.0.1 Mask:255.0.0.0
inet6 addr: ::1/128 Scope:Host
UP LOOPBACK RUNNING MTU:16436 Metric:1
RX packets:40 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0
TX packets:40 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0
collisions:0 txqueuelen:0
RX bytes:2608 (2.5 Kb) TX bytes:2608 (2.5 Kb)

comand ifonfig eth0 down/up says no such device or interface.
now i have found that installing the driver is not enough
but the m/c does not recognise the harware.Problem persists.
