laptop x errors | error message to read?

Hi all,

i have a Digital HiNote VP ts30g which is an old 166/32r/2g system.

right now im unable to get x/xfree/??? whatever running.

how do i get the error screen to a file so i can read it to see the error im having with it loading.

after googling i have come to find that the video is a neomagic 2093 which does work in linux, so that makes me hopefull, but lost as well cause im basically new.

can anyone help me once im able to save/figure out my error message?

/var/log/Xorg.0.log is a log of the last time you started or tried to start X. That's a zero in the name.

thanks Arow

now for the logs.

after trying the above i found out that my
/var/log/Xorg.0.log does not exist
what does exist in /var/log/...
xdm.log
XFree86.0.log
XFree86.0.log.old

so im thinking its one of these and i decide to copy it to my floppy so i use
$ cp /var/log/* /dev/fd0

i get...

cp: copying multiple files, but last arguement '/dev/fd0' is not a directory
Try 'cp --help' for more information.

ok whats wrong with my floppy drive?

im stuck now.

i did a ls -l /dev/ | more and can see this...
brw-rw---- 1 root floppy 2, 0 2005-02-25 22:46 fd0

so that means that it exists but i cant use it?

i just now tried as SU but same error

so where is my floppy located???

You have to mount your floppy drive.
Code:
mkdir /mnt/floppywhopper
mount /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppywhopper
cp /var/log/* /mnt/floppywhopper
umount /dev/fd0
The first command isn't necessary if you already have a mount point.

Alternately, you could just review the logs in an editor. Don't know what Linux distro you're using because you haven't filled that info in. But, I'm pretty confident that you have vi, vim, nano, or something installed. Try one of these
Code:
nano -w /var/log/Xfree86.0.log
vi /var/log/Xfree86.0.log
Another option is
Code:
cat /var/log/Xfree86.0.log | less
Just press the 'q' key when you're done reviewing the log file.

This basically means that you don't have these fonts installed. Not to worry so long as you have some fonts installed.
Code:
(WW) The directory "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/cyrillic" does not exist.
Entry deleted from font path.
(WW) The directory "/usr/lib/X11/fonts/CID" does not exist
This is the problem, just like it says. XFree86 can't find your mouse.
Code:
(EE) xf86OpenSerial: Cannot open device /dev/input/mice
No such device.
(EE) Configured Mouse: cannot open input device
(EE) PreInit failed for input device "Configured Mouse"
(II) UnloadModule: "mouse"
(WW) No core pointer registered
No core pointer

Fatal server error:
failed to initialize core devices
Look for your mouse in the /dev directory.
Code:
ls -l /dev/input
See if there is another device called mouse0. If there is, edit your /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file.
Code:
cp /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 /etc/X11/XF86Config-4.bu
nano -w /etc/X11/XF86Config-4
Look for a section like this
Code:
Section "InputDevice"

        Identifier "Mouse1"
        Driver "mouse"
        Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
        Option "Device" "/dev/input/mouse0"
        Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5 6 7"
        Option "Emulate3Buttons"

EndSection
Change the line in bold to match the location of your mouse. Save the file and try to restart X.

im guessing i need to mention that the laptop has a built in touchpad and a ps2 mouse corded into it which can be unplugged. when i installed it i left it plugged in hoping it would work..silly me :P

im just stating this in hopes of the information being of some use.

is the error basically two mouses conflicting?

Try them in order. I assume that mouse0 didn't work either?
