Laptop with radeon mobility 9000 and wine?

I got an older laptop with mobility radeon 9000 card on it.
I put ubuntu 7.1 on it and noticed afterwards that putting
the ati drivers on it is not going to be that simple.

I chose radeon opensource drivers and it seems to work very well
in everything I want to do. Now I just wanted to test wine with
it but the games like max payne that usually runs with no problems
under wine crashed quite early during the loading screen.

Is this related to radeon opensource driver? Is this deadend or
is there a way/special trick to use wine with these opensource drivers?

Ok problmem solved - I installed ubuntu edgy and this way I could use 8.28.8 driver from ati - this way it worked. Opensource driver simply is not up to the task
