In addition to what's been mentioned, HP BIOS often have "Fast Ethernet Switching" or the like and make sure it is disabled.
The logic is that fast ethernet switching switches off the second nic (rj45 or wireless) when you initialise one. So if your nic is initialised, your wifi is switched off by the bios, and no wonder you can't find it. With my HP, I have to boot (spit!) m$ Vista if some twat switches off the wifi button, because linux won't switch it on.

Do you have the package rfkill installed? Is there a device /dev/rfkill in your device files?
Some computers use a button instead of a switch to change the power state of the wireless. I think your computer maybe one of them. Install rfkill and use it to check if the device is powered on. I have a switch, but the bluetooth is controlled by rfkill, maybe your wireless is controlled by rfkill as well.

Probably your wireless interface is off so network manager doesn't see it. Try this command (as root): ifconfig wlan0 up

AR9285 chipset is supported by the ath9k driver, it ought work out of the box with any kernel newer than 2.6.29. I'd expect any Ubuntu release since 9.10 to support it without a problem.

I was having a similar problem with my Toshiba A665, and I had been building and installing a driver downloaded separately.

However, the latest kernel update from Ubuntu seems to have the RTL drivers in it that work on my Toshiba. I did not have to install the driver separately as I did before. If can hook up wired and get the latest updates you may be fixed.

Give it a shot.

Given the spam links in moromendas01's signature, and the fact that he's had two months to fix this, I don't think it was an accident. He deliberately plagiarized, and his motive was to post his spam sig.

Note that he has never participated, never posted useful information, and that almost all of this posts were plagiarized.
