Laptop screen black after suspend (Debian, Lenovo ThinkPad E555)

I have a Lenovo ThinkPad E555 running Debian Jessie 8.7. This is a brand-new install, so there is no history of suspend previously working.

The laptop goes into suspend mode properly (power light blinking, screen off), but does not wake up properly from suspend. When this happens power light goes solid (as it should), /var/log/syslog and /var/log/messages look normal, and the screen backlight goes on but the screen remains blank.

While it is sitting there with a blank screen after resuming from suspend, I *can* ssh to it.

From the ssh command line, I tried running "export DISPLAY=:0" and then "xrandr --auto" but this just sits forever and doesn't do anything. "xrandr -q" also just sits forever. (But I'm not sure if these are supposed to work or not.)

What do you recommend as next steps for troubleshooting this?

This appears to have been a video driver issue. After installing firmware-linux-nonfree to get the firmware for my Radeon card, it switched away from using the default driver, and suspend now works. Just for the heck of it I uninstalled the firmware to see if the problem would come back, and it did. So the solution seems to be "use the correct video driver".

That said, using the correct video driver has introduced other problems of its own, so if anybody has an alternative solution (some way to force the reload of the screen?) that might get suspend working with the default driver, let me know!
