Laptop place

ok here goes a wierd question all laptops to be more specific the ones i saw all have their cooler under it when placed on your leg while sitting one of my leg closes the airflow resulting temp rise does this happes to you ? that is dangerous are they stupid why are they keep putting it there?

tcaptain 05-09-2003 11:42 AM

Not sure, mine has vents under and in the back...the fan itself is in the back....maybe its only newer ones? (mines from 97-98).

Yes I know what you mean, whenever I'm on the laptop I always put the side with the vent off to the side where my leg isn't but atleast I get good airflow through.

P4's and later P3-Ms and all the AMD mobiles are like that, dude the entire frame these days is just one gigantic heatsink, there's really no getting away from venting the heat downwards to keep from melting your fingertips, or worse yet, the screens... have you noticed how laptops have jumped in overall weight since the P3s started phasing out?

Cheers

One quick answer :)

Buy A Toshiba Satellite or a Satellite Pro.

I have one. Vents are on the sides. They rock.

Toshiba, and Sony have some kick butt laptops. Buddy of mine has a laid out VIAO, and it is nice and cool with vents in the back and side.

I had a Dell 2650 that I returned after 2 weeks because of the fact that I couldn't put it on my lap.

One other very important thing. If you have the money IBM is awesome.

If I could have spent another $500 I would have bought a Thinkpad. I demo'ed an R30 and it was quiet, cool, and had only one vent on the left side.

:)

Peace out...

well I have an old P2 266MHz laptop from network - originally built by gerricom, though. It has the vent on the bottom too and that's why I can't use it on my bed.

quick solution i put a book on my bed and place it on the book seems fine

Pretty much any notebook will get grumpy and toasty while sitting on a soft surface (like a bed/sofa/carpet). It's even worse if you're recharging the battery at the same time.

Pwcca 05-25-2003 12:03 AM

...not such a problem with a cool-as-a-cucumber 133Mhz power-house like mine.

XavierP 05-25-2003 04:42 AM

Don't put it on your knee. There was a story recently about a man who used his laptop on his lap. He got badly burned. That's part of the reason they're not called laptops anymore - now they are notebooks!
