oh, sorry, i missed the 6hr battery life, your not gettin that with a p4, a pentium m or better yet the centrino package which has all the specially designed low power laptop stuff, but you'll have to ask around for compatiability...
Fedora Core 3 in IBM Thinkpad T41
works almost perfectly out of the box, only requires a driver for the PRO/Wireless Network Connection and the driver for Linux is given by IBM
I'm running a generic style laptop; "Aopen" (P4 M). I had trouble initally with the modem an graphics. Mandrake 10.1, Ubuntu and Suse 9.2 did not recognise and configure the modem or screen. Mepis 3.3 DID however recognise my modem (Agere AC 97). I fiddled by trying all the graphic driver options that came with Mepis and bingo, one of the HP drivers did the trick. The dual book installation was easy and Mepis also has a "live" disk which you can load and taste the product without full installation.
Mepis has support listed in its control centre for IBM Think Pad and also Sony Vaio lap tops. Give Mepis a look in; it was the first distro to make my laptop get up and boogie.

im hoping to major in graphic design and 3d modeling type stuff so i need a pretty good computer. it has to be a laptop because i like the portability. i want it realy small as well. about 10 or 12 inch screen and no thicker than about an inch. this means pretty much not a dell, gateway, or hp.
Ehh, you are going to major in graphics design & 3d modelling and want small but powerfull laptop? Would you mind getting Apples 12" PowerBook? I'd take it instantly if I had the resources, I was going to buy iBook but those are unfortunately outdated as hell.
What about a Sony VAIO T series? They have a 10 inch screen, DVD+-RW, very long battery life.
The processor is a bit slow, but if you need a fast processor, it would drastically reduce battery life and you might as well get a good desktop, especially considering it costs about US$2300.
