laptop hanging if more than one application is open
I have a Compaq PresarionV3000 laptop with ubuntu 8.04 installed. For the last ten days or so, the computer hangs when more than one application is open. For example, evolution mail might be open, and if I start firefox at the time, the screen turns gray ( busy indication). Trying to force quit any one- either firefox or evolution does not work- the screen just stays gray. Then I am forced to reboot the computer. I formatted the hard drive and reinstalled ubuntu, but the problem persists. Please suggest a way forward.

I don't really no if it helps you, but for me it looks like there is a Memory problem on your laptop. Maybe some setting in the Bios is wrong like the writingtime or reading time to the Memory or your Swapdrive isn't working well.
But that's only what I think about the problem. Because of the new installed disk, I think your drive isn't the problem.
