Laptop freezes on shutdown

Hello everyone my Toshiba M45-S265 laptop is hanging at shutdown. it boots fine. This really just started happening. I am pretty sure I did not install anything new. I am running kubuntu 8.04. Note I have tried booting with the acpi features on and off. Thanks.

First, keep your ACPI turned on. Your laptop is modern enough that ACPI needs to be enabled.

Second, can you see the computer output as it shuts down? Can you tell what seems to be preventing it from shutting down? Have you modified kubuntu in any way?

Check if this works:

#sudo shutdown -ha now

I have changed distros and the problems has not come up again yet.
