Laptop display help!

Hello all,

i am having a problem with rh linux on my laptop.
I am a newer user of linux, I only use it to log into a unix system to do school work. It is on a dual boot winxp laptop. rh8 previously installed with no prob. rh9 was okay too, but the autoupdate stopped working , so I decided to do a fresh install of rh9. The new install/setup seemed to work fine, but now when it re-boots I get the following error -->

LG.PHILIPS LP150U1-A2 (which I assume is my monitor type)
color, Single, TFT
(EE) R128(0): virtual height (0) is to small for the hardware (min 128)
(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
Fatal server error:
no screens found

it trys to restart the xserver, but each time it fails

I have a ibm a21p. During the installation it finds the ati128 rage mobility just fine. The monitor comes up as unprobed (which worked fine before)
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I searched the forum, and did really find what I needed, hence this post.
All previous installs worked fine, why am I getting this error now? Was it something i screwed up? My computer config has not changed at all. I need linux up and running so I can log into the sun stations in lab.
Also, like i said, I only use rh for this one task, so I do not know much more about linux than logging into lab with it..

I tried a fresh install of slackware and got the same type error. I tried entering all the settings manually, and still no luck. The system is dual boot, and windows runs fine. Is there something wrong with my graphics card in my laptop (ibm thinkpad a21p)? I have installed rh8 and rh9 numerous times before this with no problems at all. I just download rh9 again, in case my install discs were corrput, and will try rh9 again. I also downloaded madrake, and will see if that works. But since I got the same error from slackware when I try to run startx, I have a feeling something is wrong with my laptop

I started startx (the xserver right?) first without running xfree86setup , and it was running on the VESA standard. As soon as i went into the display properties and chose my ati rage 128 mobilty video card, logged out, and tried again, the same thing happend again.

(EE) Screen(s) found, but none have a usable configuration
Fatal server error:
no screens found

Maybe there is something wrong with my video card?
I then tried running xfree86setup, and xf86config, with the same results...
oh well..I log on to my schools unix network using the following command --> X -indirect "name of computer I want to log into"
that worked fine as well under the VESA settings....until I changed to my video card..
I can live with it this way, but it bugs me, as I cannot seem to get my max resolution with the VESA settings...

thanks in advance

I have done another search. Like I mentioned in my previous post, I got startx to work in slackware, apparently using the VESA settings. But I cannot get a higher resolution than 1024x768.

Why would it now start to barf? I have installed linux (redhat) numerous times with no problem?

Anyway, I am going to install rh again, then run the x86config, and have it probe my monitor, then change the driver to VESA. That is what someone reccomended in another post.

But it still bothers me that this crops up now..

I will update and let everyone know how it turns out. This seems to be a common problem?

hey,

I know this is a very common problem as I saw it posted across many different sites and forums but here is a solution that worked for me.

In the /etc/X11/XF86Config file I changed the driver from "r128" to "vesa" under the devices section and it worked for me. Hope this helps anyone else.....
