Laptop crashes on restart from stand by or hibernation

I have a Sony PCG-FRV31 Vaio, I recently did some experiments with the sleep command and my results were not good. When I entered the command sleep 3 now, I think, it went into standby mode for sure, but when I pressed a key to bring the computer back and it just went to a black screen. I shut my laptop off, and then tried sleep 4 now, and it went into hibernation, where it turns off the computer but still has all the information in memory on the hard disk. When I started the computer back up I was un able to bring my computer back to where I could use it. I'm not sure what else to include. If anyone has any ideas I'm open to suggestions.
