Knoppix CD image can read FAT32 HD?

On my Toshiba Tecra 8000 I have an unpartitioned 4GB hard drive, with Win98 residing in Drive 0 (FAT32). I can't boot Win at the moment 'cuz I erased some device file or something, but in the meantime I'm exploring this Knoppix thingy. I downloaded 5.1 and burned it to CD, and during boot-up I see this

Read-only CD system successfully merged with read-write /ramdisk.

"Merged" means what in this case? Can Knoppix read and write to the unpartitioned drive that holds a Windows boot image (such as it is)?

If I try saving anything to the hd, am I going to zotz the Windows image?

You can safely read & write to fat32 partitions using knoppix.

The "merged" message has nothing to do with your FAT32 partition. In a nutshell it is a method of joining files on the CD with the ramdisk (where knoppix runs from) to look like one filesystem.

One such implementation is UnionFS
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UnionFS

What do you mean by "unpartitioned drive" or a "windows image". The drive must have partitions. What is the output of the command:
sudo fdisk -l

Run this in a conosle window. To open up a console window click on the monitor icon on the taskbar.
