Exclamation Kernel Panic on Dell Inspiron 8600

Hi all!

I'm having problems with a laptop I have installed Ubuntu 10.10 on as it keeps going into kernel panic mode.

I believe it may be to do with the ram but im not sure how to problem solve it all the way down to one issue. Sometime i can use the laptop fine for ages, sometimes it dies just on booting up.

Today i booted into recovery mode and chose the resume normal boot option presenting me with:

Code:
Ubuntu 10.10 alex-Inspiron-8600 tty1

alex-Inspiron-8600 login: ALEX
Password:
This is when it all went wrong and i got the error outputted:

Code:
Ubuntu 10.10 alex-Inspiron-8600 tty1

alex-Inspiron-8600 login: ALEX
Password: [ 2305.021103] init[1]: segfault at ffe76d10 ip 00e68774 sp bf873c58 error 4 in libnih.so.1.0.0[e65000+11000]

I think it may be a ram error personally but stand to be corrected.

Other error lines that i have picked out are:

Code:
init: Caught segmentation fault, core dumped
and
Code:
init: rsyslog main process (735) killed by SEGV signal
These came up when I was running system tests and it just crashed to the root shell.
Whether these are relevant I don't know

Any help at all is appreciated

Thanks guys

Alex

Well. Just in case it is not ram related (I don't run Ubuntu on my Netbooks).

You might do a file system check like this user did in this thread.

Thanks for the response but doesn't seem to be that :/

I have just downloaded puppy linux and installed it to a memory stick so its running totally off of memory stick and the ram. But on boot up it gets so far and then displays:

Code:
Performing a 'switch_root' to the layered filesystem...Kernel panic - not syncing: Attempted to kill init!
... It has me very puzzled

And its gradually getting worse/more frequent!!!!
