kernel panic

Hi All ,

I would really need help. I'v got an UBUNTU linux.

I unmounted everything with umount -all , but the gui was in the background then issued fsck.
The folowing message pops up;

chroot:cannot run command'/sbin/init':Input/output error
Kernel panic - not syncing:Attempted to kill init!

At grub i modified the loading by pressing e and single linux init=/bin/bash booting up got command prompt I issued sync 3 times .

rebooted still the same message..

Any comments would be highly appreciated.

An fsck can only be safely performed in single user mode with a read-only mounted partition, or preferably, by booting from alternate media.

Your filesystem has been damaged. Backup what you can, reformat, re-install. You can play around with it by re-running fsck properly, but files will be deleted or damaged leading to future problems.

Try:

/sbin/fsck -a -y /dev/hdXY

Then you need to boot a rescue disk. For example, after booting with the Ubuntu 6.06 LiveCD, you can fsck your hard drive partition.
