Upgrading to 2.6.X series is not just a matter of downloading kernel source and compiling !
You have to upgrade several utilities, modules are not handled the same way, etc...
It's not that much of a pain, though, it is just installing 2 or 3 packages and on you go ! I had a web site detailling that, but can't remember where it is.
I juse remember that you have to upgrade init-modules-tools (go to rpmfind.net) but look out, cause then you'll have trouble with the old kernel, so to be able to boot both 2.4X and 2.6X kernels, you have to do some tricky things (I'm not an expert so i won't detail !)
