kde4 not so smooth on ubuntu8.04

Hi I used to be a die hard slackware fan but nevertheless I always was a newbie. I lost touch with linux for 3 years and during that time ubuntu became so popular that I decided to tried on my laptop.
I got compaq presario f767nr amd 64 bit processor with nvidia 7000m graphic chips set. I got athero wireless card and I follow the instructions from this site to install wireless card in my laptop.
Everything work perfectly and I install nvidia driver with aptitude packages command line installer. And at last I install kde4 desktop, I install the latest version from aptitude command line only.
And there seem to be some problems with KDE desktop like if I first log on to kde desktop it will not find the wireless connection all by it self but if I log out from KDE and log into gnome and wait till wireless had been connected. I got no problem with the wireless connections when I log back in KDE. I could log out again and log in again and again with no problem. But if I restart my computer to and log in for the first time into kde then it will not work but if I log into gnome first then it work.
Second thing is that I love baghira mac like theme in KDE so much so I download it and install it from aptitude installer but it didn't show up in KDE control center or gnome appearance changer. I try intsalling other themes and decorations from kde-look.org and try to install them but it will not show up.
I was thinking maybe because I am using KDE desktop in ubuntu that it is costing so much inconvenience. If I download and install kubuntu again will all these go away? Why can't gnome and kde desktop co exit without so much glitch? I got no such problem in slackware.
any options would be helpful.
BTW I download 64 bit version of ubuntu. And I just read the read me file for install browser plug in and that was too much effort for it and I also want to know what benefit I am actually get from using 64 bit version other than 32 bit?
thanks in advance

KDE $ Sucks, Forget It, Go 4.1 & 64 bit is faster than 32.

KDE 4.1 is a big improvement over 4 point oh what the hell is this.

And in my experience, if your machines is 64 bit, it will run faster with a 64 bit distro than the 32 on the same machine.

Good Luck, Michael

For the wifi, try using knetworkmanager.
If you want to use KDE, I suppose it might help if you install kubuntu. Perhaps installing kde4-desktop missed a few things, who knows.
Also note that there have been some issues reported with Nvidia drivers and KDE 4.x, although I haven't had problems myself.
