KDE, Slack

I've just installed Slackware 10.0 with KDE on an old laptop (P233 MHz, 32MB of ram).
During normal operation top reports that i've got 31MB + 30MB (swap) of ram allocated, and processor is on about 5-10% load, with bursts up to 40% when drawing a window.
Problem is that the whole thing takes 5 min to load, and then it takes about 5 sec to fully redraw a window.

What KDE & system settings can I change to improve the performance? Will 2.6 kernel change anything?

IMO, running KDE with that processor and that amount of memory is a lot to ask.

I have a 500 MHz system with 384 MB of memory, and KDE is slow as hell. So my solution is: I don't run KDE, period. Your best bet is to try a lighter WM like fluxbox (that's just what I use, it's not the only answer).
