k3b root detects DVD-ROM as reader only (Thinkpad R40e, mandriva 2006)

Hi,

MATSHITADVD-ROM SR-8177 works fine as CD reader.
But within k3b k3bsetup/device distinctively says
"CD reader only" or something of the like,
in which it says "CD-R writer capability no",
"CD-RW writer capability no" (DVD reader yes)
CD-writer entry (icone) is empty

Laptop is an IBM thinkpad R40e model 2684-HVG.

Cannot figure what is wrong. Any suggestion?
Will post fstab entry when possible and syslog if I can
find any clue.
K3bsetup2 does list the device correctly and say permission is 660.
Have dual boot with suse 10, same problem with k3b.
Tried ecdroast within mandriva, it does not see blank cd
Googled for MATSHITADVD-ROM SR-8177: nobody with this problem.
The laptop is second-hand, did not ever try to burn a cd before.

Device is /dev/hdc
But mandy also says that it is:
New devfs device: /dev/ide/host0/bus1/target0/lun0/cd

I have created a burning group. Anyhow running k3b as root.
Cannot test with XP (I wipe out the XP partition :-)

# k3b --version
Qt: 3.3.4 KDE: 3.4.2 K3b: 0.12.4-svn

-rwxr-x--- 1 root burning 319444 Sep 12 2005 /usr/bin/cdrecord*
(cdrecord and the like are present)

Thanks
I had wondered but thought no way, because

said
24x10x24x/8x CD-RW/DVD

I thought 24x was reading CDR
10 x writing CD
24x reading CD-RW
8x reading DVD

I would have never imagined thinkpad were not even able to write to CD...
I mean I assumed any combo drive was at least a cd writer.
So this is not the case?

Satienet, thanks again. It is indeed a reader only.
Anything that says DVD-rom is apparently read only.
Anyway, this is all due to my ignorance of "old" hardware.
But thinking about it, writer used to be like gold dust, so it figures now.

Well, well, continuing my linux learning curve,
I will learn ssh and rsync
or if I am lazy I might get a PCMCIA USB 2.0 card

Cheers
