Anyway, you should be able to install rEFInd when running system from live USB manually, as described here: http://www.rodsbooks.com/refind/installing.html#linux
no need for refind-install

What version of EZB3pro do you have?

And it is no true, that only ubuntu based distros boot (after respin) with this machine. Plain Arch boots out of the box, Antergos and Solus too. If you have version 3 with AC wifi powered by intel chip, you should be able to boot and install these arch based distros without problems and difficulties. (but again, you are going to need to install rEFInd for proper booting after install).

By the time you have rEFInd properly installed, you should be able to boot more Linux distros from USB.
EZBook 3 Gold (with intel AC and Toshiba drive)

distros I have tried to boot via USB:

Manjaro - black screen
Arch - black screen
Antergos - black screen
Arch Anywhere - black screen
Ubuntu - black screen
Mint - black screen
ElementaryOS - black screen
Debian Stretch - black screen

at this point I figured giving up would be next it was pissing me off that much. I then used isorespin.sh and Ubuntu booted into a live system (Which as I mentioned... is the ONLY distro that actually boots on this machine.. the respun iso, because it includes refind already). Installed, rebooted... black screen.

Boot back into live USB, add ppa for refind... refind-install, reboot.. black screen
Back into live USB, efibootmgr and make sure it's all looking good, reboot... black screen

Followed as best I could the 'install manually' instructions on rodsmith website, black screen. Followed it a million times, black screen.

Ended up installing Windows 10 again because I figure the only way to get this thing to have a working refind was reinstall win10, try and install refind, end up with a dual-boot system on a tiny 64gb mmc which wasnt at all what I wanted anyway.

so back to my original question: is there a way to get refind installed *and* working so it can install *and* run linux only even after I reboot without having to dual boot windows 10.

this is the first machine I have owned that's UEFI-only, everything else I've ever used has been set to legacy only in bios.

black screen problem

For the common black screen problem with Manjaro one thing to try is installing using the Manjaro-Architect ISO.
It's a non-graphical console-based "net-installer" that lets you choose your Desktop environment, kernel version, and all other things during install time, like Linuxium's Ubuntu respin script, if not better. It is a network based installer so you have to have wired or wireless internet connection working.
I actually used Architect by running it from within booted up Manjaro (attached pic) then installing onto an 8GB USB destination drive. This created a Manjaro USB boot drive with data persistence which worked fine on my cheap Lenovo G50 notebook.
But you can also burn the Architect ISO to USB using Windows and then boot that and use it to install Manjaro onto your HD/SSD... provided of course that your internet connection comes up during install. What is slick about this, is your installation gets all of the vary latest packages and drivers, and kernel version if you choose it. I suppose also it allows you to try multiple kernel versions and desktops until you hopefully find one which works.

Just installed Fedora 26 - it works: https://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=315537
1) Format USB to the FAT32 filesystem
2) Copy ISO content there
3) Install rEFInd to the USB and modify refind.conf with the help of grub.cfg
4) Boot and install the systemn then install rEFInd to the /boot, modify refind.conf

Not so user-friendly.

Cool! Btw, what do you like better about Fedora versus other distro's?

Just saw this latest mini-PC review by Linuxium which has a comment that seems to indicate that this problem is due to the notebook maker ... BIOS incompatibility or non-support of Linux:

"my updated ‘isorespin.sh’ script includes installing the rEFInd bootloader which enables booting on Apollo Lake devices when the BIOS doesn’t support Linux. "

btw, the mini-pc looks interesting if not too expensive.

I think Fedora is just more stable between "cutting edge" distros, plus it has very stable background (I mean Red Hat).
But I can not say that on this laptop (eZbook 3 pro) Fedora is definitely better than Antergos which can be installed without any 'magic'.

But I can not say that Fedora is definitely better than Antergos, for example.

1) Touchpad
Add 'psmouse.proto=imps' to the kernel boot parameters, this module is builtin in Fedora, so modprobe magic will not help.

2) Kernel
I had a new kernel issue - laptop refuses to boot to the new kernel:
https://ask.fedoraproject.org/en/que...ly-one-kernel/
So now it works.

I have managed without too much trouble to install latest daily build of Ubuntu 17.10. I have ezbook 3 Pro v4 (with back door for SSD). Here is the list of steps:
  • Download Ubuntu 17.10 latest daily image from cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live
  • Download isorespin.sh script from linuxiumcomau.blogspot.com/2017/08/installing-isorespinsh-isos-on-apollo.html
  • Use isorespin.sh to customize downloaded image to be bootable by Apollo chip and to insert rEFInd into boot process running the following command on linux:
    isorespin.sh -i ~/< downlaoded-ubuntu-daily-build.iso> -b rEFInd
NOTE: This can take 30 minutes. It will expand existing image, tweak it and package it again into iso.
NOTE: It will complain that some files are missing once it goes into image assembly stage. I have ignore this warngings.
NOTE: if you don’t have linux installed, install Oracle Virtual Box on you existing windows 10 and install downloaded Ubuntu image to run Ubuntu inside this VM where you can then run isorespin.sh script. Have in mind that VM will need 2GB RAM and 20GB of storage. Anything less will not work and script will either complain that there is no enough storage or suddenly crash due to no enough RAM
  • Use dd command to flash respined iso image to USB
    sudo dd if=<your-respined-image.iso> of=/dev/sd<your USB device> bs=4M
NOTE: if you are using Oracle Virtual Box it is easier to copy respined image back to windows and use rufus rufus.akeo.ie to flash image to USB.
  • Plug USB into ezbook 3 pro
  • Restart ezbook and press Esc to go to into BIOS
  • Go to Boot tab and set your USB as a first in a boot order. Save and Exist BIOS
  • It will now boot rEFInd where you can select Ubuntu icon that will boot into Ubuntu graphical installer. I have installed Ubuntu on eMMC drive but I could do it on SSD as well. For now I want to keep SSD for windows until 17.10 is officially released later on in October.

After installation there is no need to tweak anything regarding rEFInd or WIFI or touchpad. So far, everything is working out of box. Have in mind that my ezbook 3 pro is V4 so your millage may vary depending on version that you have.

Once after waking up from sleep wifi did not work so I will have to trace the issue next time when this happens.
This screen res is perfect and new gnome based desktop looks great.

Enjoy!

On another note, I am suspicious about Windows 10 that comes with these laptops. Windows Update is disabled and they have strange app installed as a service and client that are doing something fishy with windows activation. I do not trust these things so I uninstall it and enabled Windows updates. Who knows what else is on hidden here and therefore I am looking to get rid of it and use Ubuntu or put my own Win 10 as a backup for apps that I need but not yet available on linux.

try Antergos 17.9

Also, you guys might want to try out Antergos. Like Manjaro it's based on Arch, a rolling release. The latest version Antergos 17.9 comes with Kernel 4.12 so you potentially don't have to roll your own via Linuxium's respin script - if you don't HAVE to have Ubuntu.

[SOLVED] Jumper EZBook 3 PRO - can't boot from USB most of common Linux distros

A few more comments…
If you hit that bootup problem with black/blank screen and blinking cursor, try using the “nomodeset” kernel start parameter as explained in the Linux Mint 18.2 release notes “Solving freezes” tip. Moreover: Jumper EZBOOK 3 PRO

For touchpad not working, try changing your grub startup param's to this...
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash i8042.reset i8042.nomux i8042.nopnp i8042.noloop"
