Is there any way to boot from an external PCMCIA CD drive?

I have no clue how to go about doing this. Any suggestions?
From all the installing I've done, I have to boot a boot floppy, then load drivers for PCMCIA services to access my CD drive, but I want to install Gentoo, which doesn't have a boot floppy/driver floppies.
