Anyway, i configured kismet and launced it, but it keeps giving me this:
Code:
[root@localhost ~]# kismet
Server options: none
Client options: none
Starting server...
Waiting for server to start before starting UI...
Will drop privs to FLX (500) gid 500
No specific sources given to be enabled, all will be enabled.
Enabling channel hopping.
Enabling channel splitting.
Source 0 (intel3945): Enabling monitor mode for ipw3945 source interface eth1 channel 6...
FATAL: Failed to set monitor mode: Invalid argument. This usually means your drivers either do not support monitor mode, or use a different mechanism for getting to it. Make sure you have a version of your drivers that support monitor mode, and consult the troubleshooting section of the README.
[root@localhost ~]#
I tried iwconfig eth1 mode monitor but i gives me this:
Code:
[root@localhost ~]# iwconfig eth1 mode monitor
Error for wireless request "Set Mode" (8B06) :
SET failed on device eth1 ; Invalid argument.
well that error of SET failed isn't much of a worry according to the developers of the device drivers...that is just a warning and can be neglected... i havent used kismet but let me chk it out. otherwise it shud work pretty fine manually configuring as i gave it in the link... http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...d.php?t=436357 , i ll chk out kismet and let u knw...
well, as you can see the problem doesnt belong to kismet but to iwconfig. kismet tries to configurate iwconfig to mode monitor, and that is the point where it fails.
can you give me more details of the error, i havent used kismet before but now since you have raised a problem i will install it and see if it works and let you know asap.
till then u could look at this forum - http://www.kismetwireless.net/Forum/...chType=Subject

it seems like, they don't compile the monitor feature with in the
kernel module. Its available in the source, so a solution could be
to compile the model by ourself.
i didn't tried with fedora, but on gentoo and it worked.
kismet config with ipw2200 instead of ipw3945 (same headers).

can you be more specific. I have an ibm t60p laptop with 03:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 3945ABG Network Connection (rev 02) card in it. Kismet installs fine on SLED 10. But again putting the card in monitor mode is not working. Can you elaborate on what you said please?
Hi, I've noticed that the ipw drivers included with linux kernels are very out of date. Try replacing them with latest ipw and ieee driver sources and microcode from http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/
I seem to have the same problem, that being i have kismet installed but it doesn't seem able to run my network card (ipw3945) in monitor mode.
It gives the same errors suggesting to update my network driver, and i have been to http://ipw3945.sourceforge.net/ to do so.
It says on the site the latest driver is:-
ipw3945-1.2.1.tgz (version 1.2.1 April 2007)
But on checking my installed version, i tried running 'smart install ipw3945', it says i have ipw3945d-1.7.18-29@i586 installed? So surely thats a newer version?
ipw3945d-1.7.18-29 is not the driver. It is a regulatory program, or daemon, for the wifi card. The driver is not in an installable package, but comes with the kernel modules. Replace those with the ones from the website.
I’ve experienced the same problem with the monitor mode in my computer and to get my Intel card working in monitor mode I get the Auditor Security Collection CD from: http://www.remote-exploit.org/backtrack.html
BackTrack is the most Top rated linux live distribution focused on penetration testing. With no installation whatsoever, the analysis platform is started directly from the CD-Rom and is fully accessible within minutes.
It Works in my Intel Card (ipw3945abg)
You just have to type this comand in the console:
[root@localhost ~]# /sbin/ipw3945d
To get it working.
