Hi,
I wanted to install driver for Intel pro wireless 2200bg wireless card for Suse 9.1, but I got stuck on kernel version. I have an aspire 1681 laptop.
When I do #make to install ipw2200 card, I get the message ;
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
make -C /lib/modules/2.6.5-7.111-default/build SUBDIRS=/root/ipw2200-0.19 MODVERDIR=/root/ipw2200-0.19 modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.5-7.111-default/build: No such file or directory. Stop.
make: *** [modules] Error 2
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
which cannot find kernel source. When I do uname -a to find out my kernel version, I got
Linux linux 2.6.5-7.111-default #1 Wed Oct 13 15:45:13 UTC 2004 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
looks like I have kernel 2.6.5-7.111-default , but in my /usr/src I have only;
linux-2.6.4-52/
directory. I had to update the kernel to install my graphics card so as I understand, my kernel has been patched and updated to 2.6.5-7.111-default at that time.
So I run the make for ipw2200 by setting the kernel path;
#make KSRC=/usr/src/linux-2.6.4-52
But this time I got the error as below;
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
make -C /usr/src/linux-2.6.4-52 SUBDIRS=/root/ipw2200-0.19 MODVERDIR=/root/ipw2200-0.19 modules
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.4-52'

Any help will be appreciated as I am fed up with my cable running everywhere :-)
Thanks in advance,
I read this hoping I could help (just got my ipw2100 working yesterday), I can't seem to pinpoint your problem. Are you building externally (you should imo). Maybe try building a new kernel (you might have to anyways) with the right options, and using that instead. Might take you a few compiles to get it right, but I dont think my solution is the source of your problem. If you get no replies though, give it a shot, grab a new kernel off a kernel.org mirror and build it. Hope someone more knowledgable can help you out. See ya.
Then you have only updated the binaries and modules.
you have to update the kernelsources too.
TIP: if you want to use WEP or WPA with the ipw2200
you have to build a new kernel, because you need some
cryptographic stuff, that ist build-in with suse default-kernel:
I am not really good in kernels so I was a bit suspicious before doing any update to kernel.
I had to update it because I had problems with my graphix card and need to install the drivers. So does updating kernel sources affect my graphics card ?
Also I have WPA set in my router and would like to use ipw2200 with WPA but I didn't see any information about it. Is it compatible woth WPA ?
The driver for your ipw2200 simply has to be compiled against the sources for the kernel you'll be running it with -- The kernel source you have installed at the moment is a revision behind, and a few of SuSE's patchlevels. There should be a corresponding RPM you can install through YAST for the kernel version you're running.
Get that installed, and as long as the precompiled kernel was configured with the features required by ipw2200, it should compile nicely.
Be aware that there is also firmware required by ipw2200. That may be a seperate package to install from you -- check out ipw2200.sourceforge.net
