ipw2200, error when "make" plz help

Okay guys, I upgraded the kernal successfully to 2.6.10. I downloaded the files from soruceforge and followed the instructions to the t.

When I go to "make" the driver like it says, I get the following error:

Please help, I really need to get wireless going on this notebook.

Slackware 10.1
Kernal 2.6.10
Gateway Notebook

Tried this with both the 1.0.3 and now the 1.0.0, same error.

Thanks,

Mike

It has been a while since I got mine going, but did you install the firmware? I think that when I install the wrong firmware it gave me an error like that. Sorry I couldn't remember more.

Because of the error, I didn't go on to install the firmware, I figured that botched the entire installation. From the way I understood the INSTALL instructions, the drivers were to be done first and then the firmware. Did I do that wrong?

It's looking for your kernel .config file. Did you compile it yourself or install it with a package? Look in /boot for config-2.6.10. If it's there, copy it to /usr/src/linux-2.6.10 and run 'make oldconfig' from there.

Then, try again.

PS --
So that you might learn to diagnose these problems yourself, this is the relevant section which told me what you're missing:
Code:
make[1]: Entering directory `/usr/src/linux-2.6.10'
Makefile:484: .config: No such file or directory
.config is generated when you run make config, menuconfig, or xconfig in order to configure your kernel options.

Yea, I figured that out. See, there was a config file, but it wasn't .config. I fixed that and it made and installed fine.

I did the firmware too.

But, I'm having a problem pulling it all together to get the device to work. I got the driver installed, but its like its not associated or loaded. When I list devices, it shows the Intel network controller as unknown. But, when I list the mods I see the ipw2200 and all related files.

How do I connect the two and wrap this up, so to speak?

Some distro's look for firmware in /lib/firmware instead of where the ipw2200 install script has you put them. Try creating a the directory /lib/firmware and putting the firmware in there.

I downloaded all the firmware and tried each one until I got one to work. There are 4 (I think). Also I believe ssades is right, Slackware puts the firmware in the /lib directory. If you can not find the right place to put it let me know and I'll check my laptop tonight when I get home.

I'm going to boot into slackware in a few minutes and try somethings, but I had another question or aspect to throw out there incase it helps you guys help me or if it shows another problem.

Before I started all this, I only had eth0 (my wired connection). Now I have both eth0 and eth1, I think this is a good thing. However, both are saying "no wireless extensions" even after I've done everything above and installed the wireless tools.
