IP Address

All,

I have followed JamesGru's advice and I have installed a bcmwl5 from Dell for my HPdv2945 with a Broadcomm 4310 USB card. (No it's not USB?)

Anyways, it seems to have worked. When I do depmod -a and modprobe ndiswrapper, I get the WiFi manager to see several neighborhood netyworks, including mine. It gives me an access address but no IP address. I have used the network manager in the Control Panel and applied DHCP. Still no IP. I tried to use Fire Fox to access the router (192.168.etc etc) It won't access it either.

Also I have blacklisted bcm43xx, b43, and b43-legacy. Just in case.

Finally, I'm using SlamD64. It's a new installation.

In short, is this telling me that the driver is just not going to work with my machine? (hp dv2000 series with AMD Turion 64)

Thanks
Ace

Is the router configured for DHCP?
try using a fixed IP in the range of the router, and the router as GW

Is wep, wpa, or wpa2 enabled. If so then turn it off on the router and try connecting. Once you can do that enabled security and configured computer for it.

No, its a nonsecure setup. I'm guessing the driver just isn't going to work. I'm going to surf for ndiswrapper upgrades.

Any additional help would be appreciated. Thanks

Also, even though the system "sees" the linksys router and seems to see the MAC address, it isn't allowing me to communicate with it. I believe thats why I'm not getting an IP address, The notebook and the router aren't comunicating.

Anyone had this issue before?

Ace

Seems like there may be another module that may need to be blacklisted. Post the loaded modules.
/sbin/lsmod

Also output of
ndiswrapper -l

I use ndiswrapper with my Broadcom card. I have the B43 mod loaded and everything works. I'm wondering if you blacklisted the wrong mod?

b43, b43-legacy, and b43xx are the wireless driver moduless.. (b44 is a wired ethernet driver module)
http://linuxwireless.org/en/users/Drivers/b43 I think hios blacklist is correct.

lsmod | grep b4

I've never had too much difficulty with the broadcom Linux drivers, personally I'd rather not have to bother with ndiswrapper.

too bad that's not a 4311 or 4312 then you could have used the new Broadcom_STA Linux Driver..

STA - Might work

Farslayer,

I took a stab and tried the Broadcomm STA driver for the 4311. It installed and does the same as the ndiswrapper. My signal even went from 60avg to 100.

However, I still can't get an IP address and I can't contact the router. (192.168.1.1). So I'm in the same boat but I figure if I can get the ndiswrapper to work eventually, then maybe this linux driver might be made to work.

Thanks
Ace

so with the card up when you do iwlist wlan0 scanning it can see the AP but won't get an Address ??

When testing the STA driver you removed (unloaded) the ndiswrapper modules and loaded the two modules for hte STA driver per the how-to ?

personally if both the broadcom driver and the ndiswrapper bring the card up part way I would work on the native drivers and give ndiswrapper the heave ho.. but them I am biased against having to use windows drivers on my Linux boxes..

I hope this helps. I have worked with both ndiswrapper and the STA driver. It was the same either way. I can see the linksys router, but I can't access it or get out over the internet.

I feel like there is something that I haven't blacklisted but I don't know what it would be.

Could any of this have to do with the ndivia either net controller? I'm going to try and get on with my wired hook up to at least see if SlamD will get on at all.

Thanks again all.

well from the directions..

Quote:
Some kernel come with pre-installed Broadcom driver that support Broadcom 4312 family of
PCIE cards. If the kernel support one of those pre-installed driver, you must remove it
in order to install the new driver. Some of existing driver provided by the Linux community that
supports Broadcom hardware are b43/b43legacy/bcm43xx. There is also a ssb driver that is loaded
along with b43. This ssb driver also must to be remove.

If the kernel supports blacklist, you can add those drivers to the blacklist file so that it will
not be loaded on next reboot.
do you see a module like that loaded ?

Eureka - It works (Wirelesss Broadcom 4310 USB)

I was able to get my wireless it to work. Just to update everyone. I have…

-HPdv2945se AMD Turion 64
- Broadcom 4310 USB (rev1)
- Running SlamD64 12.1

I tried everything bcmwl5 (The dell driver as many suggested) with ndiswrapper. I tried my Vista driver bcmwl6 and ndiswrapper. I even tried the Broadcom Linux STA drivers (for 4311 and above) without ndiswrapper. I netconfiged, iwconfiged, modprobed, blacklisted, the whole shooting match with no results. The best I could get was a signal and the system telling me it saw all the neighborhood routers. I couldn’t get an IP from my router and I couldn’t tap in to the router (192.168.1.1). I even tried the wired ethernet aspect of my system and it wouldn’t work either. I concluded my new laptop with it’s nvidia controller s just wasn’t going to be able to get online with Linux. However I eventually seen someone mention the dhcpcd command. So I tried “dhcpcd wlan0” and it worked. I got on line with bcmwl5 and ndiswrapper. Then to boot, I dropped the ndiswrapper and retried the Broadcom STA Linux driver so I could eliminate a layer and so far it’s working as well. I haven’t run it for long so I can’t swear it will hold, but as for now it’s looking good.

Thanks for all the help people.
Ace
