Internet and Mouse Problems

I have just got my new laptop.
Specs:-

AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology ML-28 1.6 GHz
512MB DDR SDRAM
60GB Hard Drive
DVD Dual Layer Drive - To read DVDs and CDs and write CDs, DVD+, DVD- and large Dual Layer DVD
15.4" XGA Widescreen TFT Screen
SiSM760GX
Integrated fast LAN and 56k v.90 data fax modem
Integrated wireless 802.11b/g
3 USB 2.0 Sockets

I installed Ubuntu with only a few problems. However now I have some more. The touchpad mouse wont work and i have no idea how to make it. Also my internet wont work, i have no idea how to setup the wireless so i tried the ethernet, i activated the card and plugged it all in, the ethernet light on my router was green indicating a successful connection. However when i attempt to use the internet it thinks about it for a while and then says the page cannot be found.

Idealy i would like to get the wireless working, but if this is not possible its ok, Sorry for the lack of detail but i'm quite the newb with linux.

On the ethernet side of things, can you ping an address at the command line ... say ...

$ping cnet.com

If you are not getting DNS resolution (if it does not come back with the IP address for cnet.com), then perhaps your DNS servers have not been put into /etc/resolv.conf. You may need to add them there.

If you can't even ping an IP address ... say

$ping 216.239.115.148

Then maybe your gateway settings are not set up properly. This would involve using the "route" command (as root) to make sure that the packets have a way to get to the Internet. Try doing

#route

and see if there is an entry for a default route out through your router (I'm assuming you are using a router). If none exists, you may need to add one

#route add eth0 default gw 192.168.1.1

(or whatever your router IP address is and ethernet interface is )

Hope that helps.

For internet via ethernet nic. Make sure you have the thing set to dhcp instead of (for eg) static. Just having the nic activated dosn't really mean anything.

Update your ubuntu to breezy (you didn't say which version you installed) - much laptop stuff is fixed in the new release.

As fa as the touchpad is concerned - look in /etc/X11/xorg.conf for a section headed "input device" which mentions a touchpad, and post the entire entry here.
