intel pro/wireless2200 doesn't work in fc4

Hi all,

I bought a new laptop and try to let intel pro/wireless2200 work in FC4.
First I download the following three rpm from ATRPM.net
ipw2200-1.0.0-23.rhfc4.at.i386.rpm
ipw2200-kmdl-2.6.11-1.1369_FC4-1.0.0-23.rhfc4.at.i686.rpm
ipw2200-firmware-2.2-5.at.noarch.rpm
Install them all and reboot
Doesn't work......
Here is my /var/log/messages about ipw2200:

Jun 26 22:01:09 localhost kernel: ipw2200: Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200/2915 Network Driver, 1.0.0
Jun 26 22:01:09 localhost kernel: ipw2200: Copyright(c) 2003-2004 Intel Corporation
Jun 26 22:01:09 localhost kernel: ACPI: PCI Interrupt Link [LNKF] enabled at IRQ 11
Jun 26 22:01:09 localhost kernel: ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:04:02.0[A] -> Link [LNKF] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11
Jun 26 22:01:09 localhost kernel: ipw2200: Detected Intel PRO/Wireless 2915ABG Network Connection
Jun 26 22:01:09 localhost kernel: ipw2200: ipw-2.2-boot.fw load failed: Reason -2
Jun 26 22:01:09 localhost kernel: ipw2200: Unable to load firmware: 0xFFFFFFFE
Jun 26 22:01:09 localhost kernel: ipw2200: failed to register network device
Jun 26 22:01:09 localhost kernel: ipw2200: probe of 0000:04:02.0 failed with error -5
Jun 26 22:01:09 localhost kernel: ACPI: PCI Interrupt 0000:00:1e.2[A] -> Link [LNKG] -> GSI 11 (level, low) -> IRQ 11

Well, then I reinstall the whole fc4, download ipw2200-fw-2.3.tgz from http://ipw2200.sourceforge.net and "tar zvxf" them into /lib/firmware/
Next step is to download ipw2200-1.0.4.tgz from http://ipw2200.sourceforg.net and
make install. Oh, I even mkdir /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware, copy all files in /lib/firmware/ into /usr/lib/hotplug/firmware and reboot
Doesn't work either.
/var/log/messages looks the same
What else can I do ? Or what can I check to figure it out where is the problem?

Thank you for your kind reply.

Oh, here is something I found

#modprobe ipw2200
FATAL: Error inserting ipw2200 (/lib/modules/2.6.11-1.1369_FC4/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/ipw2200/ipw2200.ko): Unknown symbol in module, or unknown parameter (see dmesg)

then I
#dmesg
The following is something about ipw2200 in dmesg:
eth0: no IPv6 routers present
ipw2200: disagrees about version of symbol ieee80211_wx_set_encode
ipw2200: Unknown symbol ieee80211_wx_set_encode
ipw2200: disagrees about version of symbol ieee80211_wx_get_encode
ipw2200: Unknown symbol ieee80211_wx_get_encode
ipw2200: disagrees about version of symbol ieee80211_wx_get_scan
ipw2200: Unknown symbol ieee80211_wx_get_scan
ipw2200: disagrees about version of symbol ieee80211_rx
ipw2200: Unknown symbol ieee80211_rx
ipw2200: disagrees about version of symbol ieee80211_rx_mgt
ipw2200: Unknown symbol ieee80211_rx_mgt

Can somebody help me?

I have the same issue, only I'm kicking it old school with FC2. I updated the kernel, installed the files, and for the life of me I can't figure out what to do next. I think I have a problem with the ipw2200.ko file or something, I'm pretty sure it didn't go where it was supposed to. But nearly identical error message. The firmware is in the right directory, I'm almost positive. Installing things went ok, I thought.

Question: what does it mean to "install" the ipw2200.ko file? Check the INSTALL file for ipw2200, you'll see what I mean.

I install the firmware tgz file from ipw2200.sourceforge and unarchive them into /lib/firmware/
I guess that's the process to install the firmware for ipw2200?
How can I check if the kernel turn on the wlan?
By the way, I think kernel 2.6.11 is quite a new kernel which should include the wireless function and
enable it in the kernel initially, isn't it?

Best Regards

Heh, I gave up. I took my laptop to my friend the Linux Guru while I was in town, and he said there's a file, something like initscripts, that wasn't included in FC2. By the time we discovered this, it was too late. So I'm just going to upgrade to FC4 and run a yum update. He thinks that will solve all of my problems, and he scolded me for using old software.
