Intel HD 3000 driver installation for Opensuse 11.3

Laptop Dell Vostro 3450.
The intel Graphics driver for HD 3000 did not install out of the box with opensuse 11.3. The default driver loaded was fbdev. The file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/ 50-device.conf had #Driver "radeon", which I have changed to #Driver "intel" with no change in performance.

Screen resolution by default is 1024x768. This resolution is gives incorrect aspect ratio for display.

Please suggest the method to install the appropriate drivers. Thanks for your help. I am not an expert but my linux competence is slightly above newbie.

Have you made sure all your packages are up-to-date? Very likely, the intel driver that shipped with 11.3 is too old for the Intel HD3000 GPU. It's possible that opensuse has packaged a newer version of the driver and in an update to 11.3.

However, I have to wonder why you would have recently installed 11.3 on a new computer. While 11.3 is still technically supported, it will cease to be supported early in 2012, and is already well over a year old.

Hi Adam, I updated 11.3 online and all packages are up-to-date. The choice of Opensuse 11.3 was because my team has been working on a software project and the development has been on 11.3. We usually upgrade the platform for the entire team after taking care of the migration and dependencies. The upgrade to newer versions will take a couple of months!

I believe the Intel HD 3000 graphics works out of the box with 11.4 (http://en.opensuse.org/HCL:Video), Sigh !!

Hi..When is a usable driver for Intel HD Graphics 3000 Expected to Come Out?I am planning on building a computer and I don't want to shell out more money for a dedicated graphics card if a driver for HD Graphics 3000 is coming out soon for BSD and Debian.

Any reasonably up-to-date linux distro should already include such drivers. OpenBSD might already support such GPUs, and work is currently ongoing to supprt them in FreeBSD with patches already available for testing.

I have installed Opensuse 11.4. The intel HD 3000 graphics was recognized out off the box. No problems.
