Intel E-Edition vs amd 64 bit. 3400+

Hi there, I am kinda new to this all, but now I´m getting myself a laptop, that I will only boot on linux. Now I know there are many "Linux certified" laps out there, but I can , for instance, get a major discount from dell (although I hate them nazis). Now my question is: The difference between 64 bit amd laptop cpus and extreme edition intel, obviously there are no comparisons on the net, But Linux supports 64 bit enviroment much better than windows, and also (at my best knowledge) lousy support for the radeon cards in the dell (inspiron xps).
I have read a few posts about the dell xps, and I know it ain't completely hopeless for linux, but isn't the 64 bit cpu much, much better... Or am I missing something?

With hope for useful answers

Regards

This is an interesting post. Most of the time you compare the Intel Extreme Edition with the Athlon FX series. I'm going to tell you now (this coming from an AMD fan) that the Intel EE has the 3400+ beat. It's about a draw with the FX series but not on the classic series.

However the Intel EE is better for raw processing power under windows you said you were going to run Linux exclusively which gives you a big advantage. Microsoft has really dragged it's feet on getting a 64-bit OS going (I think it's for Intels sake) but the Linux Community hasn't and a 64-bit distro should run faster on a 64-bit processor then your basic x86 distro on the Intel EE.

I'd go with the AMD with a 64-bit distro.

PS my conspiracy theory about Intel and Microsoft is that they have worked together and dominated the whole computing market for so long that they make developmental leaps in Software and hardware together. I bet when Intel releases a desktop 64-bit processor Not to long after Microsoft will release Windows XP 64-bit edition.

Yes, most of the time you compare those two, but I just recently read a performance comparison on the FX and the 64 bit 3xxx amd's, and in that post, the 64 bit version really beats the FX, altough the FX runs a 128 bit (whatevermymemoryisslownow) too much reading ,but the reason they gave was how the cpus worked with the memory (FX only used registered ecc something that was slowing it down), and yes I know that is Really badly written

And yes, I am fully in support of your conspiracy theories I myself have only used amd processors so far.

But as I said, I might get a really good deal (through a university sleazing), but I ain't THAT tied to dell. Might fix it otherwise.
Can you (or anyone) recommend a 64 bit amd laptop that is comparable to the xps? (They have for instance radeon pro 9800 256mb card, dual ddr and some other really sweet things. (are there ANY useable drivers to get the 3d working for the new radeons a.t.m.?)

Nvidia is supposed to be better for linux, but they also have been dragging their feet, in that case getting a good graphic card for laptops, ATI has a really good headstart on them a.t.m.

Any suggestions for a comparable laptop with amd (and maybe Nvidia) ?

Otherwise I'll just forget the whole thing and get a cute little subnotebook (in which case I'd also like comments on what works best, money seems not to be an issue).... cuz it ain't my money

Regards

If you're looking for a good AMD64-based laptop you should start by looking at the R3000z series from Compaq. They pack a lot of performance for the price and they are pretty well supported under Linux.

As for your conspiracy theories - Intel has had 64bit CPU's for years... The problem is that they suck.

By 64 bit you mean xeon and such? Those are only used for servers (as far as I know) and we are talking about home computers here (and laps), so that ain't the same category.
Correct me if I'm wrong

Well, since you asked for it:
AMD has a current line of 64bit processors for desktop and laptop use, simply called the AMD64. The Intel Xeon is not a 64bit CPU, but they do have a 64bit CPU on offer; the Intel Itanium 2. The Itanium is meant for server and serious workstation use and is probably not a viable option for home use but the AMD64 sure is. The AMD performs very well (especially considering it's pretty affordable), especially under a true 64bit environment like Linux can be.

I said a desktop 64-bit processor. The Itanium series is 64-bit processor but it's a server CPU like the Xeon processors and not designed for desktop use.

If we just drop the debate about server/desktop processors... Then there still is this question, whil inspiron xps offers e edition, which has considrably more power than comparable amd cpu's (once seen xp 3700+ in a laptop though, the laps with those cpus still are faaar beyond the xps in gpu power, 'cause they All (as far as I have found) use a really inferior gpu (most of them radeon 9500 or 9700 with 64 mb mem). And is the xps the Only laptop with a useable graphic card? (radeon 9800 256mb) or are there other options (Come to think of it, Alienware is the most likely to have such, I'll go check their page or have you seen any comparable laptops (this xps is 3.6ghz, 2mb L3 cache radeon yadayada), although this ain't a 64 bit processor, won't I still get more power from it through linux and new drivers than with amd 64 bit with 1 mb cache and only 2.something ghz?

Checck out ibuypower.com. It's a newer company but I've read some good reviews on them. Unfrotuantly the only one they have that has a 256MB Graphics card is intel based. They do have an AMD64 system with a 128MB Graphics card. You might also check Falcon Northwest.

It all comes down to what you plan on doing with your laptop. If your looking into gaming more then anything (which it looks like you are) then you should look at the graphics card more then the CPU. If your looking for doing things like office applications, surfing the net and only playing Unreal Tournament 2k4. Then you should go with a notebook with a lesser graphics card and AMD64 processor.

Also if you plan on gaming check out the Alienware notebooks. They have one that has an Nvidia geforceFX 6800 PCI-E card.

I would recommend you get a notebook with a Nvidia card just because they have better Linux support then ATI.

Once again asses what you plan on doing and buy based on that.

The problem with mobile gaming and Linux is that Intel and ATI dominate the market which means no 64-bit Linux and (from I've been reading) Graphics Hell

What I am looking for is a laptop with amd 64 bit processor, AND geforce 6800 go card (seems the best after a bit of research). Nividia and amd for the linux, and pci-express card in case I want to play some CS (dual boot with windoze or use wineX if it has gotten advanced enough, that I don't know).
BUT, wherever I look, I just find that combo... Always intel with nvidia and old atis with amd...
Isn't there anywhere this combo in a laptop?
Please let me know if you can find it

Regards

I just checked the Nvidia Holiday guide and they have all the laptops listed that have the GeforceFX 6800 go and they are all Intel based. The only exception is the Hypersonic Road Warrior Aviator EX7 which says they have the 6800 and AMD Athlon 64. However, when you get to the site you find out they have 1 model with the 6800 thats intel based and 1 model that has the athlon 64 that has an ATI Radeon Mobility 9700. I guess you can't have your cake and eat it too.
