Installing Ubuntu to 2nd Hard Drive

On my laptop I have 2 hard drives, C and D, C is already partitioned by HP and has the recovery data but I have decided I want to install Ubuntu on to D. Here is an image of my Hard Drives:

and the system devices etc:

I can boot from a USB flashdrive but how do I then get it to install on to the D and NOT C?

The two easiest ways for me would be to install from cd/dvd or net-install. I like a cd/dvd best because if there are any problems and you have a good cd/dvd most now days will work as a live cd/dvd also.

I dont think you quite understand what happens...

I can boot up into Ubuntu using my USB which shows the same OS as a CD would do, on the desktop there a button that I can click on that will then install Ubuntu.

What I need it to do is install it to D:\ instead of C:\

What you are on about is what i am already doing just I am using a USB drive instead of CD/DVD

Depending on your version of Ubuntu it will default a format for you or you may use Advanced and partition your hd to the size you prefer. On default I would think it would probably want all of D, but that is my guess. If I remember it also will ask you if you want to use the entire drive.

Ok but how do I make sure I choose D and not C?

I think on the installation it will show you a partition of windows, not sure how it will list it. It should be something like Windows C or sda1. It will tell you the sizes of the partition it wants to use.

I don't know how much you know about partitioning but, you won't see anything like "C" or "D" in Linux referring to drives or partitions.

Use your Ubuntu, open a terminal and run the command: sudo fdisk -l (that is a lower case Letter L in the command) and it will show you partition information. You should be able to determine which drive corresponds to your lettered drives in windows based upon the different sizes of the drives.
