installing ubuntu on acer 516 pentium 2 ?
 
hi, thanks in advance for any help. i'm a newby in linux and
wanner install ubuntu. which first step do i take? i'm planning to cancel windows os off my laptop. what should know about sound card, hardware....

You might want to print a report from control panel --> system --> hardware --> device manager and click the little print icon. Be sure to select all devices and system summary.

Another thing you might want to do is put a knoppix CD in the cdrom and reboot. If it boots up linux fine, then you're probably okay. (although it'll probably be slow).

The one thing about Ubuntu on your old machine is that it will be pretty slow unless you do a bare install and then add packages from the ground up. YOu may also need to recompile your kernel to increase performance. I would recommend trying something like Damn Small Linux or a bare bones Debian netinstall and build it from the ground up.
