14.04.3 fails to complete dual-boot install in various ways, and screen jumps sometimes. Win10 installs just fine ...

Hi John...

Welcome to the forum

Please read the information here. The more details we have, the more we can help you try to find a solution.

What are the "various ways" the install fails? Are there any error messages? If so, Please post them. Also, is this the laptop you have? If so, I'll be surprised if Ubuntu 14.04 or Windows 10 works very well on it without any sluggishness. It might be better to use a more lightweight distribution like Lubuntu 14.04 or Zorin OS 9 Lite.

Regards...

Steps Taken

Thank you for your reply!
.
I have tried to install 14.04.3 a half-dozen or more times, from a USB stick. Usually it gets as far as the partitioning screen, but the last few times the machine just shuts down in the middle of the install, before the partitioning screen. In these instances, a couple of text messages flash by in the upper left-hand portion of the screen, but I am not quick enough to catch them.

Are you using UEFI with your windows install? If so, you must also install Ubuntu UEFI or it won't boot or on the other hand, windows may no longer boot. You need to boot in EFI mode from Ubuntu. You also should use the manual install option referred to as "Something Else" in Ubuntu. Is windows using the entire drive? You need to have unallocated space to create and format partitions for Ubuntu.

Hi...

Please take a look at two possible solutions here, (using another USB drive or using the "nomodeset" parameter.) If that doesn't work, you can look through the wiki page here. Use the F6 key to choose "acpi=off" and, if needed, "noapic" and "nolapic."

Also, make sure your copy of Ubuntu is not corrupted.

Let us know how it goes...

Regards...
