Installing Linux Toshiba 335CDS Laptop

Presently loaded with Windows XP Professional. I would like to dump it and go to Linux. However, am a real newbie. Did a little research and understand that because of the 225 MHz Pentium II speed, 92MB RAM, and a 4GB hard drive, I am limited in the distribution I can install. Reason cited is slowness.

I am a real newbie but my experience with windows has made me dubious of any installations. I REALLY want to have all my ducks in order when I go to Linux in order to reduce the frustration factor. As many of you know advertised support is not always as good as it is cracked up to be. So would be grateful for any experiences and references.
