installing components in Dell Insp. 1100

I followed the HOWTO at http://geocities.com/randomnumbergenerator2001/ and downloaded and installed the network card drivers provided through that page, but when I execute the 'make install' command, it says:
"Makefile:18: *** Linux kernel source tree not found. Stop."
Any idea how to fix this?

Also, my Inspiron has no flopy drive (I opted for the 64meg keydrive), but the keydrive seems to have some compatability problems with RadHat and Mandrake. I've tried mounting it in Mandrake on my desktop computer using:
"mount /dev/sda1 /mnt/usb"
And it appears to work, so I copy the files over to the drive. But then I plug the keydrive into the Inspiron and after running the same command, it doesn't find any files on the drive. Once, it did show a "lost+found" directory, but there was nothing in it, and I know I didn't put that directory there.
So I go back to my Mandrake system and, even before I plug the keydrive into the USB port, I can access the files, so it seems I just made a local directory called /mnt/usb, but it's just another location on my hard drive.
Am I missing something here?

okay, you need to make sure the folder that your in when you run make is in /usr/src/modules, you also need to make sure you have your kernel installed at /usr/src/linux-whatever and have a symbolic link from that file to usr/src/linux (note:" ln -s /usr/src/linux-whatever /usr/src/linux" is the command, whatever is your kernel version number). if it still doesn't work at that point make another post.f
