Installed MEPIS, no sound can't find modem
I have just loaded Linux on my laptop (ThinkPad 600E) along with Windows 98SE. The Linux came from the “Point and Click Linux” CD ROM. GRUB will very gracefully boot either OS at start up. When I booted Linux it asked for my choice of kernel, 2.6.7 or 2.4.26. Only 2.4.26.will boot successfully. A message came up that device /dev/dsp cannot be opened (no such device). Also, KPPP when I try to configure it for dial up says, “modem cannot be found” (A Creative Modem Blaster V.92 on tty0 ((COM 1)) that works perfectly in Windows). These seem to be recognized problems but the solutions have eluded me. The Point and Click book indicates that I am eligible for a free MEPIS latest version download. How do I do this and will a new version fix the above problems? If not, how do I fix these problems? Will a new version of MEPIS be compatible with kernel 2.4.26?

Try these:
Dear hbbliss!
Use the latest stable Mepis, its worth that. I use it too, and everything works fine. The kernel thing. Please don't use kernel 2.4.xyz, becouse it is old now. Use the latest 2.6.xyz. It will solve a lot of problems. You are using an external modem if I understood correctly. You must have drivers for that, but it is possible, that mepis will recognize that. In kppp watch for these:
Configure -> Modems -> New: give a name to the modem (for example: Creative Modem), modem device: tty0, flow control: hardware, line termination CR/LF, Connection speed (!!!): 115200 This number is important, becouse if you set a too high value, the modem will not respond. After you completed this, go to the modem tab (the above parameters were in the device tab and these two tabs in the new/edit modem window). Here press the Query modem... button, and wait until it finishes. This tool checks the modem of yours, if it will write out a lot of useful info about your modem, than your modem is configured well. If it only writes out ATI1, ATI2, etc., there is something wrong. The 7 ATI lines mustn't be the same (ATI 1 and 2 will be the same however). You can experiment with some values, like Connection speed, line termination, and modem device, if it doesn't work for the first time. If you change a value, use the Query modem button, it will make you sure if everything is fine (or not). Good luck!

These instructions are for Suse, but will work on any distro:

Trust me, there is A LOT of bad advice out there for getting sound to work on a 600E, and THIS is the way to do it!

Congratulations on being one of the elite few who has actually managed to get the sound on a 600E to work in Linux. Don't even ask how many years I spent trying...
I can't speak much for Mepis, but on Suse you have to have the ntp (network time protocol) service running (even if it is not configured) before you start the mwave service. Then you can attach the modem and configure it.
